What conditions can a Speech Therapist help with?

How can we help?

Communication and Speech Difficulties (dysarthria, apraxia): We support adults with various communication challenges such as aphasia, dysarthria, and dyspraxia. Sometimes the mouth, face, and respiratory system muscles may become weak, move slowly, or not move at all.  We will assess the function of these muscles and may recommend therapy using drill-based activities and functional strategies.

Eating, Drinking, Swallowing (dysphagia): Our Speech Pathologists provide swallowing assessments and mealtime management plans to support clients with safe eating and drinking.

Voice Difficulties (Dysphonia): Speech Pathologists can assist you if your voice has started to change from too much wear and tear. Or some conditions like Parkinson’s Disease cause the voice to become quiet.

Stuttering (fluency): Stuttering can include repetition, prolongation, and blocking of sounds. Treatments may include reduction in anxiety about speaking, breathing techniques, and learning to use gentle sounds.

Assistive Technology: Our therapists can provide communication devices, speech generating devices and other adaptive technology for communication.

Cognitive Functions: Speech pathologists can introduce evidence-based interventions for cognitive-communication challenges that may include memory, attention, organizing, functional deficits

Learning and literacy Independence: We support your learning, literacy, and communication independence and help to develop your communication confidence.

Carer Training: Our Speech Pathologists offer training for family, friends and support workers regarding the participation interventions.

Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC): Refers to various tools/strategies/methods that can enhance spoken language or provide a different way of communicating.  A trained Speech Pathologist can provide support throughout AAC development’s trial, assessment and training phases.
